Rock Faces

Rock face stabilisation and rockfall protection systems keep people and infrastructure safe.

If not correctly managed, rockfaces can cause emergencies in moments. Preparing with proactive rock removal or containment can save lives.

The removal of loose rock and large blocks from cliff faces can be used as a short-term solution for cliff face stability problems.

Regular rock scaling can be used as a cost-effective means of managing the risk of rockfall from your slope.

CAN’s Geotechnical contracting team can be with you at short notice to inspect and remove debris that is an immediate threat to people or property.

Workers in a tunnel

We use a variety of methods to carry out re-profiling and rock removal.

  • Jacking
  • Percussive breakers
  • Plug and feather
  • Expansive grouts
  • Pyrotechnics and explosives.

The methods used are chosen to suit the specific project considering location, rock structure and site constraints.  With this in mind, it enables us to find the method that will best resolve your immediate problem whilst taking into account the risk of longer term instability.

If there are large blocks threatening property, people or infrastructure, we may install a temporary restraint system.  This will allow us to break up the rock where it is and lower the smaller debris in a controlled manner.

Important to realise, due to the unpredictable nature of a fallen rock mass, it’s crucial that those working on the project have an understanding of the potential to create further, unnecessary, instability.

Our Geotechnical contractors are highly accomplished and professional.  They work under the supervision of those who hold many years of experience in this field.  They ensure, without reservation, that the operation is completed safely.  In summary, this provides the maximum benefit to the client for the future.

Inspection, Design & Build

From initial assessment through to installation, we manage the full lifecycle of rock face stabilisation. Our team identifies risk, develops practical solutions, and delivers them safely in complex and difficult-to-access environments.

Catch Fences

We install high-performance catch fence systems designed to intercept and contain falling debris before it reaches infrastructure.

Rockfall Bolting & Netting

Combining stabilisation and containment, we install rock bolts and protective netting to secure unstable faces and control loose material.

Anchors

Our anchoring systems provide critical reinforcement for unstable rock masses.

Rock Removal

Where instability poses an immediate risk, we carry out controlled rock removal using specialist access techniques that ensure hazards are eliminated quickly and safely.

Void Filling & Grouting

Stabilising weakened or fractured rock by filling voids and discontinuities with engineered grout solutions. This strengthens the rock mass and helps prevent further deterioration.

Devegetation

We remove vegetation that can destabilise rock faces or obscure inspection. This improves visibility, reduces root-driven movement, and supports the long-term performance of stabilisation measures.
